Introducing Senior Julie Cohen

Julie Cohen began working in clay in her sophomore year. It wasn't until she discovered the process of slab building that she found her true passion for working in clay. Her first major piece was a "Japanese Vase." Using a series of slabs, cut from a template she had designed, Julie constructed a ten sided geometric form that was quite a feat of engineering to build in clay.

Julie is a perfectionist in construction. She quickly mastered the slab technique and created two outstanding clay vases that showcased her ability to understand how clay slabs respond in specific forms.

Her Japanese vase won a silver medal in the National Scholastic Art Awards.

Julie is very experimental in her construction of slabs and finds unique ways of forming them to create dynamic surface qualities. She created her largest piece yet when she joined two cone shaped forms together, one with a fluted surface.

Currently she is busy constructing two slab vase forms before her senior year is complete.
